If you’re passing through High Wycombe, you won’t want to miss these especially spooky caves near London. Even better, they come with a twisted history, for the Hellfire Caves are no less than the haunting ground of the legendary Hellfire Club.

What was the Hellfire Club?
What the Hellfire Club actually did remains a bit of a mystery. It may have been a devilish and Satanic sect, steeped in the darkest of arts. It may also have been a lot of very rich people throwing scandalous parties and wearing fancy dress – underground.
Whatever its history, you won’t want to miss these stunningly creepy caves near London. Even better, you can explore the beautiful West Wycombe Park nearby when you’ve finished.
What are the caves?
There aren’t many caves near London (prove me wrong), so I’m surprised more dayouters don’t know about these. Originally, they were used as a quarry, but this fell into disuse. Then the local nobility noticed that they were an ideal venue for a party or two. Nowadays, commoners pay a modest entrance fee (£24 for a family ticket) to get inside. Sometimes, the caves close for filming or events so book ahead if possible.
But what of the day out? In the caves?!
The Hellfire Caves does a great job of curating the caves. You walk down eery, echoing passages, narrow with the weight of centuries and tonnes of rock. Interesting displays and information boards guide you on your way – ever deeper into the dank heart of the earth.
OK, you don’t quite get to go into the heart of the earth, but you do wind up at the main cave where they held the Hellfire Club parties. If you’d like to have a go yourself, you can book the space for weddings or club events. It did feel a bit cold and damp but might be OK if you’re jumping around with a drink or three inside you.
If all the exploring wears you out, there’s a bijou cafe at the entrance that serves a small menu of good food. You can eat your baguette soaking in the atmos of the stony surroundings.
How to find the caves
There’s a small car park next to the Hellfire Caves entrance and when I say small, I mean there’s space for about three cars. We parked by the nearby school where there’s some public parking. Otherwise, you’re driving down a narrow country lane with no way to turn around.
If you’re taking public transport, you’ll need to get a bus from High Wycombe which drops you near the entrance to the cave. You won’t have to walk far, but it is quite steep so prepare to give your calves a workout.

Is it a full day out?
The Hellfire Caves lie only about an hour from London. So it won’t take too long to get to them from the city. You’ll get a fun and atmospheric hour or so from the caves, and a bit more if you want to stay for lunch. But, if you want a full day, you’ll need to extend your trip into the stunning park. Or why not go and explore nearby High Wycombe?
